Scholem (1897-1982) , born in Berlin, was a leading authority in Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism. He joined the Zionist movement as a student, and believed that this “implied a thorough understanding of the full historical, religious, and cultural tradition of Judaism, to the study and interpretation of which he henceforward devoted himself. ” He studied at Berlin, Jena, Berne, and Munich, and earned his doctorate in 1922. After WWI, Scholem was part of the faculty of several academic institutions in Israel, and “[i]n 1962 he was elected vice-president and in 1968 president of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
